The Dudus Debacle.....

Christopher 'Dudus' Coke has been making news in Jamaica and overseas for the last nine months, exposing the true reality of Jamaican politics. Dudus being the son of the late so-called drug kingpin Lester 'Jim Brown' Coke, inherited the Don crown from his father.

Jim Brown was backed by Edward Seaga during his tenure-ship as Member of Parliament for the garrison called Tivoli. Mr. Seaga ran one of the many garrisons in Jamaica, where criminals are breed to defend political parties, ensuring their victories in elections.

The systemic problem of crime and violence in Jamaica can be traced back to the political parties that led to the tribalization of the country for over 40 years. These parties being the Jamaica Labour Party (JLP) and the People's National Party (PNP) have led an economy that prospered post independence into a gutter of debt and dependence.

The issue of Dudus is a mere smoke screen hiding the true issues of Jamaica. Even in this modern day and age, the tribal tendencies that seem inherited from our fore parents continue to direct the path of a beautiful Island that now grabs at straws for hope.

The search for Dudus in the last couple of days, and the trail of carnage unleashed of the community of Tivoli points to the lack of serious intelligence and leadership in Jamaica. For months the JLP has hid behind patriotism of party in protecting Dudus from the United Stated authorities. The backlash of this action has been severe on the citizens of a country that is suffering under the effects of a global recession. Many lost their US visas, and with that an opportunity for employment, while their Government stood by protecting so-called ideals.

Dudus over the years established himself as a protector of the people of West Kingston and Spanish Town, ensuring that in the light of the absence of proper police protection the people felt safe. In fact, in downtown Kingston businesses and customer alike felt safe to conduct their business, even with the cost of extortion that had to be paid. The state has failed for many years to protect the hard working people of Jamaica, and to this day hide behind 'dons', laying the blame squarely at their feet.

It may be a good thing that this incident took place in this era. But one wonders if the same action taken in West Kingston will be done in all the garrisons. It is indeed sad what has taken place, but the end game was evident, battle lines were thrown years before, the pawns were placed for sacrifice and the King issued his command of attack. Jamaica has lost the war, and now tries to blame Dudus instead of aiming at the true enemy, the many citizens who have sat by for years, hypnotized by tribalism. The time is ripe for a rebirth, a turning from evil to good. Jamaica has always feared God, and should restore itself to this humbleness, 'the fear of God is the beginning of wisdom'.

World Cup beckons...

With less than eleven days before the start of the World Cup in South Africa, I will begin my assessment of the teams. I should have done so a couple months ago, but I realized it would have been difficult. Its hard to assess a team when you have no idea of the players that will make it on the different squads.

For example, no one thought that David Beckham or Ronaldinho would be left out of their squads due to injury and other reasons. Now that the teams are apparent, it is time to analyze them without bias. Frankly I have no favorite team in mind as yet, as I believe this World Cup will be one of the most competitive in years.

Cancer blimp....

This is an important article based on research conducted by John Hopkins Hospital. You may not be aware but John Hopkins is one of the leaders in medical research, especially in the area of cancer. This is a must read for all women..

Cancer Update from John Hopkins

No plastic containers in microwave.

No water bottles in freezer.

No plastic wrap in microwave.

A dioxin chemical causes cancer, especially breast cancer.

Dioxins are highly poisonous to the cells of our bodies.Don't freeze your plastic bottles with water in them as this releases dioxins from the plastic.

Recently,Edward Fujimoto,Wellness Program Manager at Castle Hospital , Was on a TV program to explain this health hazard. He talked about dioxins and how bad they are for us.

He said that we should not be heating our food in the Microwave using plastic containers...

This especially applies to foods that contain fat.

He said that the combination of fat, high heat, and plastics releases dioxin Into the food and ultimately into the cells of the body...

Instead,he recommends using glass, such as Corning Ware,Pyrex or ceramic Containers for heating food...You get the same results, only without the dioxin. So such things as TV dinners, instant ramen and soups, etc., Should be removed from the container and heated in something else. Paper isn't bad but you don't know what is in the paper. It's just safer to use tempered glass, Corning Ware, etc.
He reminded us that a while ago some of the fast food restaurants moved away
From the foam containers to paper. The dioxin problem is one of the reasons....

Also,he pointed out that plastic wrap, such as Saran,is just as dangerous when Placed over foods to be cooked in the microwave. As the food is nuked, the high Heat causes poisonous toxins to actually melt out of the plastic wrap and drip into the food. Cover food with a paper towel instead.

ALSO ------------------------------------- Bottled water in your car Very dangerous.

This is how Sheryl Crow got breast cancer. She was on the Ellen show and said this same exact thing. This has been identified as the most common cause of the high levels in breast cancer, especially in Australia .
A friend whose mother was recently diagnosed with breast cancer said the Doctor told her: women should not drink bottled water that has been left in a car.
The doctor said that the heat and the plastic of the bottle have certain chemicals that can lead to breast cancer. So please be careful and do not drink bottled water that has been left in a car, and, pass this on to all the women in your life. This information is the kind we need to know and be aware and just might save us!The heat causes toxins from the plastic to leak into the water and they have found these toxins in
breast tissue.Use a stainless steel Canteen or a glass bottle when you can!

LET EVERYONE WHO HAS A WIFE/GIRLFRIEND/DAUGHTER KNOW PLEASE.

Lessons from letting go....

Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen. Hebrews 11:1

If you ever heard the quote, "let go and let God", you would marvel at the fact that many Christians still have not grasped this simple concept. The next interesting quote I have heard in my lifetime is, "I will forgive but I won't forget".

It is interesting in life how we fail to "let go and let God". Ultimately our emotions embrace us like a bear holding on to its cub. We are gripped by the fear that was implanted by the world. Its as if the world is always in our rear view, pulling us back into its bad habits and dreary ideals. But there is hope in Almighty God, if we are just willing to let go.

This week I was on the Jamaica Star website and observed something very shocking. The Gleaner Company seems to have a camera that allows them to see the East Street side of their building. On this video that day, I saw a man pressing the button to cross the road, then out of nowhere a Truck lost control and slammed into the man and the stop sign. It was a horrible sight. The first thing that crossed my mind was that could have been me. I once worked on East Street, I could have been waiting to cross the road. It made me realize even more that I have to let go and let God. Our life is not ours, we don't control the next breath that we take.

The truth be told, if we don't let go and let God, then what will happen when our life is taken. Even if our life is not taken this moment, what type of life would we be living if we just keep everything inside, not allowing God to direct our path, our life would be useless. The bible tells us in 2 Cor. 5:7, "we walk by faith and not by sight". The faith we have comes from God, not from any man that walks this earth, or anything in this world. If we allow God to illuminate our path, then we can never stumble, even when the many bumps we face seek to weaken our faith.

I've found that when I became a Christian, that my life changed for the better. There were times when I was caught up in the world, and my life just felt empty. I would worry every time when I was sick that I would die and go to hell, but all changed when I gave my life to God. My change did not happen over night, and trust me I am still learning about God's expectation, but I have learnt that I have to let go of the past.

When bad things happen to us we have to us let go, we have to enjoy this moment we have now. Treasure the ones close to you, show compassion when hated, teach things that uplift and bury those things that breed sorrow. And in everything you do carry the banner of God, so that people around you will see you glow..

On my mind, in a minute, hour, day, year....

If I could rewrite my life,
I would want to learn about God sooner,
I would change the way I walked my early years,
the paths I traversed would be different,
the years of crying would be erased,

The doubt that raged within would be silenced,
I would take each day as if it were my last,
the love I have for people would be the same,
the caring and joy of giving would still brighten my pathway,
I would sacrifice more for the poor,
and be willing to lay down my life for my beliefs,

The dreams of success I had would be replaced by faith,
my destiny would have been placed in God's hands earlier,
my words of sorrow would be glazed with love,
I would study his word more,
ensuring that I able to bring the lost into his sight,

If I could rewrite my life,
things would be different,
but in the end,
happiness has found me,
which is the love of God that now flows within me,
I have found him,
and my life will never be the same,
thank you Lord....

Lessons from doubt....

But he must ask in faith without any doubting, for the one who doubts is like the surf of the sea, driven and tossed by the wind. James 1:6

There has never been a scripture that is written just for me like this one. Throughout the years, doubt has been my friend, even when things seemed great it would follow me. With doubt I have lived my life in fear of letting go and trusting God completely. I’ve truly been like a wave drifting back and forth without a true purpose.
My doubt didn’t start yesterday, but long before I even knew what it meant. There have been many challenges in my life that may have created this doubt. Whether it was loss of loved ones, failures of life, or low self-esteem, I could not really pinpoint when it started. The only thing I know is that over time it felt as though a silent killer was raging deep within me.
Couple years ago I can remember having a panic attack one night, oh my it felt more like a heart attack. Cold sweat streamed down my cheeks as I felt as if I would die. I was so frightened clinging on to each breath. My thoughts swiftly swung to my life and what I had achieved, what would my legacy be, at that time, I felt as if I had been useless. For months I would be awakened by the same attacks of doubt.
It was learning about God that truly turned my life around. No other gift that I have been given could ever compare to it. By becoming one of God’s children I learned that with faith that all things are possible, and that sometimes we go through life wondering if God will deliver the things we want, but forgetting that there is no guarantee we will get what we want, but more we should think about what God wants for us. My mind is thrown to the life of Abraham, he never doubted that God would deliver his son Isaac, the bible says, “yet, with respect to the promise of God, he did not waver in unbelief but grew strong in faith, giving glory to God,”[Romans 4:20].
There is no way I could ever say the journey has been easy. But each day when I begin to doubt God and his purpose for me, then I am allowing unbelief and lack of faith to enter my life. To be truly honest, I have never really figured out my purpose in the eyes of God. I know that God expects me to preach his word every chance I get, and to live a life that others can know that I am not of this world, but my true purpose seems hidden. Maybe I am truly living my purpose now, maybe each step I make, and each word I write I am fulfilling God’s purpose for me.
At times though, it hard to comprehend the way God does things. He seems to carry us along so many different paths. The road of faith is truly a testing ground to land us into heaven. If we dare to give in to doubt, then we allow ourselves to be dragged into the world. I’m learning to smile more when hard times come, to accept the things that burden me with joy, and to lift my head to the heaven in prayer when I feel I am all alone. God is always there for me, no matter the doubt, his word heals my soul.

Editorial Blimp: Caribbean Integration? Why?

As I watched Air Jamaica staff crying over the loss of the national airline I wondered about this concept of Caribbean integration and why we were even bothering with the concept. My thoughts raced even more as I listened to the West Indies being pounded into the ground by Sri Lanka on Friday in their 20/20 super eight match. Added to this I remembered reading about Jamaican artistes being barred from performing in certain Islands due to their vulgar messages, which is valid of course.

The truth be told, Jamaica has added to a lot of woes that some Islands now bear. For example, the criminal network in Jamaica has swiftly spread to other territories, which has made Jamaica hated among many. While the majority of Jamaicans are not bad, it takes one rotten egg to spoil the rest.

However, Jamaica has strongly placed the Caribbean on the map. In fact, without little Jamaica many would not even know about the Caribbean. While many Islands bash this great nation, it should be considered that Jamaica has had to be there for a lot of these nations. It is easy for some to forget the help that Jamaicans have given in their nation building. But in life when you help people, often times as soon as they are on their feet they become ungrateful and are quick to forget.

When you look at the contribution of Jamaica, you have to marvel and say to yourself, what a blessed country she is. Jamaica has embodied the true meaning of a melting pot of races. Countries like Canada and the US can only dream of such concepts. With our motto firmly built on integration of races, others have over time learned what it truly means to be "out of many one people". In some of our Caribbean countries for instance, blacks are still treated as second class citizens, but not so in Jamaica. We may have class ism, but no racism, at least not on a ridiculous level. I remember when Jamaica qualified for the 1998 World Cup, I was in the stadium just watching the many faces of race, and I said to myself, this is one of the greatest nations of earth.

I can recall reading about Marcus Garvey and his influence in the United States and I marveled again. Martin Luther King Jr. and Malcolm X laud Garvey as a mentor and someone that led them to believe that blacks can be more. Garvey's message pushed the civil rights movement to another level. The freedoms we take for granted so often were borne upon the backs of people like Marcus Garvey, a Jamaican who paved the way for other Caribbean folks.

In the area of music, where would the Caribbean have been had there not been a Bob Marley or a Jimmy Cliff and so many others. They paved the way for our music to be recognized. They may speak of Soca or Calypso, but these music carry no real message of liberation or freedom.  In fact, they speak of Vybz Kartel and others, but when Carnival comes around they are ready to gyrate and 'carry on bad', but no one is quick to ban these things. If we are to be fair then all music that preaches violence, profanity or lasciviousness should be condemned. As the Jamaican proverb goes, 'donkey say di worl no level'.

When you examine the contribution of our scholars to Caribbean development, no country stands out like Jamaica. Take the number of Rhode Scholars that have been Jamaican and you will realize our brilliance. We have world famous scientists and doctors who have had to help our neighbors. People forget too quick our worth.

In the area of sport there is no comparison. Our athletes have helped to place the Caribbean in the top echelon of excellence in the world. Where would the Caribbean be without our athletic performance at all levels. Starting with Herb McKenley and Arthur Wint, then Donald Quarrie, Merlene Ottey, Shelly Ann Fraser and the phenomenal Usain Bolt and so many others. And that is just track and field. We have had sports men at all levels who have raised the Caribbean flag to new heights, yet we are now looked down upon.

When you look at the infrastructural development of Jamaica, there is none like it in the Caribbean. Jamaica may be poor, but the infrastructure that is being laid can be compared to a lot of first world nations.
There are a lot more areas that could be examined, but it is clear that Jamaica ranks at the top of the Caribbean in so many areas. Yes we all recognize that crime has been a major problem in Jamaica, and the number of murders per day is just absolutely crazy, but if there was any real integration between Caribbean nations then we could all solve the problems we face. Crime is everyone's problem now, but some nations are turning their back on Jamaica.

It seems high time that Jamaica seek to re-examine whether Caribbean integration makes sense or even exists. It seems to me that Jamaica stands to give up more then they will gain from integration. It may be better for Jamaica to rely on building its nation with other nations that will seek to help instead of tear down.

Sports blimp: Will it be Manchester United or Chelsea??

The winner of the Barclay's English Premier League comes down to one match for England's fiercest rivals, Manchester United and Chelsea. If either team wins their match today they will win the title. A draw will just not be enough going into the final matches. Chelsea lead the standings by one point.

Manchester United faces Stoke City, while Chelsea meets Wigan United. On paper it seems that Chelsea should win the title easily against this minnow, but in soccer the ball is round and on any given day a team can surprise. Manchester United will also have to take their match serious if they are to stay in contention, one slip and they will hand Chelsea the cup. Even though they must hope that Chelsea lose, they must always ensure that they win.

Both teams will be playing at home and it should be a mouth watering affair. My bet is on Chelsea sweeping it, they should win by 3-0.

Beyond the Recession: The Return of High Oil Prices
By Dayne Anderson, BSc, MBA, RFC
In 2008 in the midst of one of the worst recessions in history
crude oil prices reached a record price of $130 a barrel. By
September of the same year, prices were hovering around $110.00
per barrel. This was influenced by a cut in output by the Organization
of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).
The OPEC nations are made up of Algeria, Angola, Ecuador, Iran,
Iraq, Kuwait, Libya, Nigeria,Qatar, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab
 Emirates (UAE) and Venezuela.
Oil is considered as the black gold of commodities in some circles.
Oil went as high as 159 in 2008 before dropping sharply to around $39.00 a barrel
in the early part of 2009.Now in 2010, oil is again on the rise ranging from between
$83.00-$86.00 a barrel of late. It seems that the lessons of the past two years have
not been learnt. But it is evident that the price of petroleum will continue to rise as the
demand for this precious commodity increases worldwide. The fact is that oil is critical
to any emerging market. One can consider the fact the 90% of vehicular
fuel needs are met by oil. Oil is easily converted to byproducts such as:
  • Gasoline
  • Diesel
  • Jet fuel
  • Heating and other fuel oils
  • Liquefied petroleum gas
Petroleum is also the raw material in chemical products, pharmeuticals, solvents,
fertilizers, pesticides and plastics. Oil touches every aspect of human existence
and thus the demand for it. In countries like China and India with populations in the
billions, the need for oil cannot be overemphasized. As these nations middle class
continue to grow their spending power increases. China on average imports around
100 million tons of crude oil a year to supply its energy demand. The United States is
considered another great consumer of oil. Even though they have good oil reserves
they still have to import large quantities of oil to outset the demand. American love
their SUV’s and trucks.
If you look deeper into the return of high oil prices you will see that the road ahead
will be very slippery for all nations. The developing and third world nations are going
to be adversely affected as they are mere importer of oil, as most of do not produce oil.
There is also a direct correlation of oil prices and food. As mentioned before, oil is used
in fertilizers and pesticides which is crucial to third world nations, who often supply first
world nations. With the increase in oil, the cost of fertilizers and pesticides continue to rise,
making it difficult for smaller nations to compete with larger nations or conglomerates.
The cost to even move the agricultural produce is even further increased as oil affects
gasoline and diesel prices. At the end of the stick, the customer who goes to a supermarket
will be forced to endure higher prices for goods, and this is not just agricultural, but everything
that has to be moved via air or ground.
Nations who depend of tourism are also affected. With the increase in oil prices, jet fuel rises,
increasing the cost to travel. Many Caribbean nations were severely affected in 2008-2009 as
many persons were forced to stay in their host country.
If we break down the usage of oil by nations we see a clearer picture of the demand.
The percentage of oil usage looks like this:
  • 32% in Europe and Asia

  • 53% in the Middle East
  • 45% in South and Central America
  • 41% in Africa
  • 40% in North America
World consumption of oil average 30 billion a year based on 2009 data.
The recession is far from over, and it is evident that oil prices are climbing higher each month.
Where it will end no one knows. Several speculators are predicting $250 a barrel, but that is
just outrageous.

Lessons from mother....

The proverbs of Solomon. A wise son maketh a glad father; But a foolish son is the heaviness of his mother. Proverbs 10:1

She carried me in pain, and nursed me with joy, a mother is like no other. The bible teaches us that we should honor our mother and father so our days will be long. Often times people take their parents for granted, forgetting the struggles and the sacrifices that they have endured so that their child could be who they are.

The mother has always been the tower of strength in the family. For me its frightening when I hear some of the things that are happening in this world regarding mother's. Some countries are allowing two men to adopt children and all that non-sense. It makes you wonder if these folks ever had the touch of a mother. A mother knows her child like no other, its as though there is a connection implanted by God. The child just has to utter one word and she understands. She is always there to dry the sad tears and to encourage with kind words. When father is caught up in providing for the family, she take on the role of both mother and father.

In our culture these days when fathers are missing, she stands strong against the world to make us better. A mother is a perfect gift from God. She ensures the survival of humanity, even when she is taken for granted. Without her in the family there is no family, even when man tries to say otherwise. She never ceases to give her all, even when she's beaten down by hypocrisy and abuse, she holds her head high, knowing that she has her children to feed.

In life we should honor her daily, she is worth a right or left arm. She is a beauty in God's eyes, a comfort for her child and rare jewel in the hand. A mother is like no other, no common words can speak of her glory, she is the moon that the brighten the skies on a gloomy night..

Sports Blimp: World Cup fever..

Steven Pienaar

Hosts South Africa faces tough competition in the 2010 World Cup. Drawn in the same group with World Cup contenders Mexico and France they face an uphill task to advance from this mini group of death. As hosts, they will be even under more pressure from their local fans. South Africa passionately called 'Bafana Bafana' has an estimated population of 48 million people. They will rest their hopes on Steven Pienaar, who currently plays for Everton in the Barclay's Premier League. Pienaar was brilliant in defeat against Brazil in the Confederation Cup last year, and also against Spain in that competition.

In their last three warm up games Bafana Bafana has won two and lost one. In their last match against Jamaica, even though winning by 2-0, their defense line seemed at sea and will have to improve in this area. They also lack a strike force up front and will have to rely heavily on their skilful midfield to orchestrate goals.

They will face the mighty Mexico in their first match, and there is no doubt that their back line will be tested by the fast moving Mexicans. Good luck Bafana Bafana your home crowd in behind you...
