Chaos in Egypt
As calls continue for the resignation of President Hosni Mubarak continue, Egypt remains in a state of chaos. President Mubarak has called out the 450,000 strong military hoping to quell the mayhem in the country. Over 30 people have died, with more casualties expected in the coming days.
Egypt is critical to US interests, being the largest Arab country in the Middle East and influential in peace treaties throughout the region. With the peace treaty with Israel brokered by the Carter Administration in 1979 being one of the hallmarks.
Egypt has the 10th largest army in the world and no doubt if stability takes place within the army then problems will erupt in the Middle East. Saudi Arabia and other oil rich countries would be in danger. We have already seen a rise in oil prices, and a further surge expected this week.
With the recession still at the doorstep of many lives, one only hopes that the turmoil will soon be over.
