On my mind in a day, month or year...

Lord lead me away from temptation,
when it shows its ugly head,
give me strength to overcome the evil one,
when I stumble on this journey,
let me hold your sturdy hand,

When its seems my faith is lost,
let me kneel before your throne,
outstretched and ready to repent,
may you forgive my many sins,
as I gaze towards heaven,

The pleasures of this world surround me,
but let me rise from my lustful state,
clinging strongly to your Word,
my life I put in your hands,
take away my tearful heart from man's reach,

And when I no longer breathe,
let my life be totally yours,
and may the devil be buried underground,
where he truly belongs,

Lord be my all,
be the very food I eat,
you are worthy,
you are mighty,
I tremble in fear when I let you down,
your love for me keeps me going,
along this painful journey of life....

Investing 101: Stock market slump last week...

The US stock market took a beating last week, causing many to speculate if we are really moving away from a recession. This was due to many factors, some of which include:

  • Uncertainty in Europe in regards to its deficit levels.
  • Goldman Sachs and the Greece credit swaps.
  • Fall in confidence levels in the US
  • Some worries about China and its GDP figures
  • The Toyota safety debacle
You can pick your choice as to what may have caused the slump last week, but it is clear that we are still viewing the world through the woods, with the mountain side far from our line of sight. It appears that the market still has not hit the bottom and there are still buying opportunities for the strong at heart. This week we will look closer at some possible penny stock buys..

Lessons from Temptation....

James 1:14 "But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust."
Throughout this life the Christian is tempted on a daily basis, just as Jesus Christ was tempted of the devil to commit sin. Unlike Jesus Christ though, we are often dragged away and enticed by our own evil desires. The writer in James is right when he goes on to say in James 1:15, "Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death."

The sad part of this equation is that when sin is accomplished it brings forth spiritual death. Physical death is the least of our problems. Jesus Christ warned in Matthew 10:28, "Do not fear those who kill the body but are unable to kill the soul; but rather fear Him who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell."

You see we go through life doing all sorts of sinful acts directed like a band by the devil. Do we have a choice in the matter? Yes we do. Just as Jesus Christ resisted the temper, the devil, so too we must seek to resist him. James informs us in chapter 1:13, "Let no man say when he is tempted, I am tempted of God; for God cannot be tempted with evil, and he himself tempteth no man:". We cannot blame God for our evil deeds at any time, it is our lustful desires that we must control.

It is not an easy road, and many have fallen along the battlefield. But we have no hope of salvation if we do not control our sinful nature. When we signed up to become Christians we were warned by God that we must transform our thoughts. We must daily be like newborn babes craving the Word of God if we are to overcome the devil. We see this emphasized in 2 Peter 2:2, "like newborn babies, long for the pure milk of the word, so that by it you may grow in respect to salvation."

The sooner we realize that each day that we continue to walk in sin, we walk closer to spiritual death, then we will see that we are slowly losing our relationship with God. We cannot continue in sin forever and think that God will hear our prayers. The bible tells us in Romans 6:1-2,"What shall we say then? Are we to continue in sin so that grace may increase?May it never be! How shall we who died to sin still live in it?"

How shall we who died to sin still live in it? This is a question that haunts me so many times when I sin. It is a question that should haunt us all who have fully accepted God into our lives. It reminds of how God describes a man who goes back to the world, 'like a pig going back to its sty, like a dog going back to its vomit'. I think so hard on these things at times, and I realize that I am far from the mark. However, I cannot keeps replaying the sins I commit, but I have to change completely and do the will of Almighty God.

As Christians our goal is to avoid spiritual death. What purpose would our lives have been if not to leave this world and enter the bosom of God. Temptation is something that we must avoid and eliminate from our lives.

Canada stomp US in Women's Hockey at Winter Olympics but...

Canada stomped US 2-0 on Women's Ice Hockey today, but that was far from the story. The real story was the celebrations that took place after the victory. The Canadians women were seen smoking cigars and drinking alcohol in their celebrations after fans had left the stadium, which is a breach of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) rules. In fact one of the women were under the age permitted for alcohol consumption in Alberta, which is 19 years old.

However, we are already hearing that this type of celebration is acceptable given that they won. The Canadian officials have apologized for the incident, stating that the women should never have taken their celebrations from their locker room to the ice floor.  Some journalists are saying that this is no big deal, as there were cases at the last Olympics of steroid use and blah blah blah.

I agree that people should celebrate when they win, especially against the US, but this is outrageous. What message are we sending to our young people seeing these images? Why would anyone be smoking cigars and drinking alcohol after a victory? If these are athletes, they should be practicing good lifestyles. Now I am not saying that one glass of wine is bad, but if you live in this country, people drink and get drunk, they don't just drink for fun.

The fact they apologized is a good sign, but this is after the fact. There should be some sanctions, but more than likely it will be swept under the rug. This is the norm when teams from US or Canada do things which go against the rules. If it was a team from Jamaica or a smaller nation it would be a big deal. But as the Jamaican sayings goes, "di worl no level"....

Powell and Bolt square off today at Gibson Relays

D-day for Gibson Relays

Today is the day for the Gibson Relays. The high schools and college teams will be in a keen contest to win their races. The Relays will be without Calabar High School, who withdrew one of their athletes from their as he was over age, which resulted in them receiving a one year ban. The organizers have said that this should not affect the overall competitiveness of the meet.

The highlight of the meet should come in the race between the Usain Bolt led Racers Club versus the Asafa Powell led MVP team.

However, action is always ripe in all the relay events at this meet. I'm looking forward to hearing the results or possibly watching it online on TVJ, but we shall see.

On my mind in a day, year or month....

Can anyone complain to God?
Isn't God always good to us?
when we fall into temptation,
we fall into our own peril,
captured and taunted by the devil,

God is so great that the clouds burst in shower at his might,
the river's rush to the glory of his oceans,
the birds fly high to touch his sky,

The awesome glory of the Almighty cannot be crafted my man's thoughts,
God lifts the soul to the highest high,
asking only that we surrender all to him,
all not some,
for he is a demanding God,
he doesn't accept excuses,
nor takes kindly to our abuses,

For God is not framed by man,
but has framed man in his own image,
his sons and daughters,
his princes and princesses,
for we are royalty,
not common folks,

If we give our all to him,
there are no limits,
no boundaries to suppress his love,
for God loves us more than a poet's pen could write,
his love is unconditional,
not coined from romanticism,
his Son has shown us this through his great sacrifice for us on the cross,
let's praise him,
let's lift his name on high,
for he is always worthy of our adoration,
every sec, every millisecond that we have a breath,

Amen..

Reggae Boyz throw away lead in Argentina.....

The Reggae Boyz squandered an early lead to lose 2-1 to Argentina in Argentina last night. Having held the lead for almost 75 minutes, the Boyz showed no composure and eventually were beaten by a weak Argentina team. Jamaica's goalkeeper should be blamed for both goal. The first one was a weak shot which he allowed to beat him on his near post. Then on a corner kick, he left his box carelessly, leaving an open goal for the forward to tap in.

The immaturity shown by the Reggae Boyz indicates a lack of international exposure. Instead of passing the ball around with a 1-0 lead, they were more intent on giving back the opposing team the ball on a regular basis. The coach did not seem to have a plan, and his substitutions showed a type of football which one would have hoped Jamaica had moved beyond. Instead of strengthening his midfield, the coach sought to introduce defensive players in the second half. We were left with one forward against four defenders most times. This has often been the case for most Reggae Boyz teams, and it is about time that this changes.

This Argentina team, whether it is an A or a Z team was one of the weakest I have ever seen and should have been soundly beaten by Jamaica, but poor technical ability was the team's downfall. In my view, Argentina's football is in a sick state, and their coach is woeful to say the least. My prediction is that in the upcoming World Cup they will not even past the first round. I may live to eat my words, but that's my opinion.

On my mind in a day, month, year.....

You shall not shackle my brain anymore,
the chains that wrap around my thoughts shall be freed,
your words of hate will never erase my love,
your anti-Christ vibes won't break my faith,
my courage does not come from you,
nor my patience rest in your bosom,
I'm not a slave of your wickedness,
your evil ways can't make me stray,
God is my witness,
my words do not fall in the well of doom,
my savior knows my soul,
and waters it with wisdom daily,
his perfect love for me is without reason,
no philosopher or poet could coin his verses,
he lifts me and keeps me in the clouds,
giving me strength to face each moment....

Investing 101: Penny stocks revealed

Yesterday we looked at the concept of penny stocks. We examined the fact that penny stocks are high risk investment, whose value is oftentimes $5 or less. Penny stocks often are not traded on the major exchanges, but have become increasingly popular due to their price.

If you are in the investment market you will find that daily you are bombarded by Companies that are seeking to entice persons to buy penny stocks. However, one must never go into any investment with their eyes wide shut. We have seen over the last 2 years the effect that unplanned investments can have on our lives. Many investment schemes blossomed with claims of high returns, and in the end we all got burnt. It will take us a long time to recover the monies that we lost, but we have to start somewhere.

The benefit of penny stocks is that you can invest small amounts and trade large units. In effect you could spend $500 on a stock and control 10,000 units of that stock. If that stock moves by say 3% in a month, you would have added an additional 300 units to your original value. In effect your dollar value or unit price per share would also increase by 3%. However, there is always a flip side to any argument, the negative effect is that you could also lose 3% on your investment if the stock does not go the way you want it to go, remember eyes wide open. The advantage though is that the capital investment is small. The other advantage is that you will learn over time that you have to be monitoring your stocks daily. You should never be fooled by banks into thinking that you give an investment adviser your hard earned money and go to the beach or better yet, stop working. This is what they have gotten many people to believe, and before long they have lost all their money.

In the upcoming articles we shall look at all the concepts involved in trading these stocks and the pitfalls. Plus I will recommend some stocks that I am trading and some that I am researching. Your feedback would be appreciated at any time, so as to teach others and just so we can help each other.

Lessons from disappointment.....

"And now, Lord, what wait I for? My hope is in thee."
Psalms 39:7

Throughout this life we go through times of disappointment. When we are afflicted by illness, when we lose a loved one, when people around us let us down. It is not the end of the world, or the end of our life. Far too often we put our trust in man, thinking that they will never fail us. The truth be told, we should always put our trust in God first, and then others.

In the country I live in, people become easily disappointed as they put their trust in their jobs, money, cars, house, spouses, and even their pets. There is hardly any talk of God in people's lives. The only time you ever hear about God is when someone meets some disaster in their lives.

When we are disappointed though, it means that we may have put ourselves in a mindset, thinking that we control our destiny, and that is a recipe for failure. Disappointments teach us that everyday will not be rosy and with sunshine glaring into our doorway each day, but that if we trust in God, then our fears will be swept away in the wind. The Psalmist has this to say, "In God (I will praise his word), In God have I put my trust, I will not be afraid; What can flesh do unto me? [Psalms 56:4]".

Once we come to understand that God is in control of our lives then the fear of disappointment will vanish. Our heads will be held high, and a smile will cross our cheeks when this selfish world tries to deceive us and make us a prisoner to the devil.

We are God's children and by our example ours learn. If we take sadness with joy then we teach others that they too can cope. Someone once told me that "a sobbing countenance reveals darkness and bliss."
Let us shine will the glowing moon, lighting the hearts of men.

West Indies trashed by Australia in ODI..and look set to lose the second ODI

Surprise, surprise..not. The Worst Indies as some call them were annihilated by Australia in their first one day international yesterday. Australia made a massive total of 256/8 off 50 overs, and then bowled out the WI for 143 all out off 34.2 overs. Chris Gayle continued his poor form, by making 7 runs. The only resistance came from Pollard and Simmons, who made 31 and 29 respectively.

In the second ODI, WI were bowled out for 170 all out off 39.4 overs. This time Chris Gayle made a duck[0]. The middle order batted well, with Smith top scoring with 43 runs. At the time of this writing, Australia were 24 without loss, and look destined to repeat their win from yesterday.

When laughter ends...

When sadness forms,
and laughter is swept under the door,
the wind will carry away the happiness that existed,
the remnants of hope will be scattered in the crevices of the past,

When laughter ends,
the tears will flow,
the eyes will swell with grief,
but God is close by,
in the shadows,
in the  rainfall,
his hands will lift our sorrows,

When laughter ends,
we will gain wisdom,
the road traveled will remain,
we shall learn what life is all about,
and when the morning comes,
we will sing of joy untold....

Investing 101: Penny stocks

Earlier in the year we examined the definition of stocks and the stock market. Now we will examine an area that must people do not really know a lot about.

A penny stock is one which trades for less than five dollars a share. These stocks are often not traded in the major exchanges such as the New York Stock Exchange  [NYSE], Toronto Stock Exchange [TSX]. These stocks can be easily manipulated by Companies as there is often lack of information on their performance.

However, there are penny stocks which do trade in the major exchanges. These stocks can offer good return, especially in the areas of mining and fertilizers. It should also be noted that many penny stocks have become major stocks over time.

But a word of caution is that these are high risk investments, as many of these stocks lose all of their value in the long run. Different regulators worldwide often give these warnings to new investors, and this should never be taken lightly. With that said, if proper research is done, there are gains to be made from these stocks in the short run. Short run in my mind is holding a stock for a period of 3-6 months.

I currently invest only in mining stocks, which specialize in gold, copper and silver. As we are all aware, gold prices are moving up daily, and are set to go even higher this year. Copper is also moving, and with the move towards alternative energy, it cannot be overlooked, as it is used in the production of batteries. Also to be considered is Companies that specialize in lithium production, which is also a key component. To a lesser extent, I also monitor penny stock Companies who are involved in fertilizer production, which is a critical area, due to the demand for vegetables worldwide. Canada and some Central American Companies are key in this area.

Tomorrow we will look at some of these stocks and their performance to date.. Happy investing, and please only risk what you can afford to lose, times are hard.

Mr Cottrell and his wife in writing this book, took the same route that Hannibal via the Alps to get to Rome. He journeyed "in a 1 1/2 ton Austin Bus converted into a trailer, and "Vairee Luvlee". The name was given to her by an enthusiastic French peasant whom he met in the valley of the Loire; and it stuck" [Introduction, ix] The journey took him around six weeks, over 4,000 miles. It included two crossings of the Pyrennes, the Alps and the Apennines.

His writing paints a picture that grips the soul and make you want to read more and more....

Tomorrow, we start Hannibal's journey together....

Lessons from sin..Part 1

"Therefore, as through one man sin entered into the world, and death through sin; and so death passed unto all men, for that all sinned:-for until the law sin was in the world; but sin is not imputed when there is no law." Romans 5:12-13

There are many people who pretend to be flawless and pure, but God knows all our hearts. God knows when we sin, we cannot hide from him, so why do people still pretend to be without sin?

Sin entered the world by one man, and by one man (Jesus Christ) came the resureection. This is clearly illustrated in 1 Cor.15:21"For since by a man came death, by a man also came the resurrection of the dead.". Adam and Eve were the first persons to try and hide from their sins, but there was no where that they could hide in the universe so that God could not find them. It is no different today for us.

However, one must not be fooled in thinking that we must just continue sinning in God's eyes. If we are born of God, how can be continue transgressing against him. 1 John 3:9-10 let's us know this important point, "whosoever is begotten of God doeth no sin, because his seed abideth in him: and he cannot sin, because he is begotten of God.In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whosoever doeth not righteousness is not of God, neither he that loveth not his brother." This teaches us that God never intends for us to continue sinning, in fact, he does not want us to sin at all.

When I was growing up, people would also tell me that, "oh lying is just a little sin man, it's no big thing".  After I understood what the bible teaches, I realized that there are no little or big sins, sin is just sin. What we have is degrees of sin, and the unforgivable sin [Matthew 12:31 "Therefore I say unto you, Every sin and blasphemy shall be forgiven unto men; but the blasphemy against the Spirit shall not be forgiven."].

Sin is all around us, in everything and everyone we meet. We cannot be naive and bury our heads in the kitchen pot. When we face the reality of who we are, and examine all aspects of our life's we will be slow to judge, and quick to point the finger at ourselves each time. Everyone should walk with a mirror in their hands, and hold it up when we decide to rebuke each other. This does not mean that we must not rebuke, because the bible teaches us in 2 Tim 4;2, " preach the word; be urgent in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort, with all longsuffering and teaching."

When we go out tomorrow, let's take time to reflect of ourselves and the things at circulate in our minds. We may be shocked when we contemplate the things that we often do, and how oftentimes they are sins. Write them down and grab your bible..

"I acknowledged my sin unto thee, And mine iniquity did I not hide: I said, I will confess my transgressions unto Jehovah; And thou forgavest the iniquity of my sin. Selah" Psalm 32:5
