Preparing for CXC resits...

Life would never be easy for him, and this challenge would build his true character. He was now preparing for his resits in January, under the watchful guidance of his sister. His sister was always like a mother to him, he held her in high esteem. She never gave up on him, even when he would decide he couldn't do it. He had fond memories of the time his family home was wrecked by hurricane. The famous hurricane was 'Hurricane Gilbert'. At the time his mother was overseas, and it was only his sister, brother and father in Jamaica. His sister had to take care of all of them, taking over most of the cooking and motivation at home. One could never ask for a better sister. She was a brilliant woman, who was always willing to help others first. Whatever she put her head to she always achieved. She was a great motivation for him. He always wanted to be like her in all areas of his life.

His Dad had put his sister in charge of his academic progress. The time had come for him to put in the kind of work that was lacking when he was in school. He never wanted to be seen as the 'dunce' one of the family. His family had high standards and everyone expected him to emulate them. His sister had booked him into extra classes, and at first he was not happy. It meant that he had to go back to JC for these classes. He celebrated when he was told that the classes would be in the evening, when the shadows danced with the street lights. He was happy to be back on the campus, but he never expected to come back in this manner. He still loved supporting JC, it was in his blood.

It was about 2 months to go before the exams and he was right on track. His sister kept drilling him with past papers and keeping him focused on passing the exams. He felt that he was on track, having practiced so many questions, but he knew he had to do more. He had now started preparing for his A' level subject as well. His classes were on Saturdays, which worked for the best, as he played chess at the same venue. So he just went to classes then to play chess. The A' Level class made him feel like he was in sixth form, but he knew he wasn't. At times he would find a corner to hide at breaks, not wanting to answer any unnecessary questions. He was disappointed with himself, and he knew he would have to redeem himself. He was motivated and seeing the prize ahead of him....

Just when oil seemed like it was going back to $73..it has fallen again below $70...resting at $69.82 up to the time of this writing. It is not clear what has caused thsi move, but speculation in the market may be the major force behind it...Time will tell...

Bolt in Madrid..

Usain Bolt was invited to watch his favourite player Christiano Ronaldo in Madrid. Ronaldo now plies his trade with Real Madrid, who played Deportiva La Coruna in an exciting 3-2 win for Real. Bolt seemed very happy to be in Madrid to watch the match. He even stated that he thinks he can run faster, when questioned by journalists...

Bolt jogs to 9.81 at Zurich Meet...

Fresh from his exploits at the World Championship in Berlin, Usain Bolt jogged to 9.81 ahead of Asafa Powell at a Golden League Meeting in Zurich yesterday. Powell was out of the blocks first, but Bolt, who appeared very tired caught him after 70 meters, and was able to give him a smile before hitting the finish line.....

Crime scary in Jamaica...

In recent weeks I have been following the crime situation is Jamaica and I must say it seems to be getting worse daily. The gunmen seem to have been very brazen in their actions. During the week we saw the killing of a police woman at her gate, and then the shooting of two policemen on Red Hills Road. It seems as though these gunmen have lost any respect for persons in uniform. The sad thing is that after those shootings, I never really heard much from the Government or the Opposition. Is it that it is just business as usual? What is really going on?
I even saw a story that one day on the junction road, gunmen shot a man in board daylight and threw him over a bridge with motorists seeing it all in clear view. It sends shivers up your spine when you visualize the mind of these criminals terrorising the public daily. There is also the story of a serial rapist who is terrorising the females in Mona. It seems like a lot of the news is being suppressed of late. We have to wonder why this is happening. With all the exploits at the World Championship(WC), the criminals continue killing each other and innocent people. The Government seem to have lost a grip on the situation, and the Opposition seem to have accepted the fate of Jamaica. Who will change things? It seems that the Prime Minister will have to come with some plans fast. He mentioned the cutting of certain expenditure in the budget, so how will crime be solved. This cutting exercise will ultimately mean that persons will lose their jobs, there is no way around that. So when people lose their jobs, then what? How can they provide for their families?

Are we going back to the days of 'tightening our belts'?
It seems that there is no safe place to live in Jamaica anymore. Everywhere is being bombarded by criminals. My own view is that drastic measures need to be taken to solve our problems.

Firstly I believe that the tax system must be improved immediately. The number of persons evading taxes is far too high, and the corruption is still too high. We need to ensure that everyone now has a TRN, and then go through every person on the TRN system and find all who are delinquent and assess them. The tax laws must also be modified so that persons who evade taxes must also be placed in prison, it cannot just be that they arrange to pay over 10 years. That is just ridiculous. Our tax dollars are supposed to help us to pay our bills and for nation building.

Secondly, our police need to be given all the tools they require. Not just guns and vests, but the latest technology at their stations and in their police cars. Crime fighting is no longer a 'dark age' concept, but a modern day problem. I was happy to see the emphasis on the forensics training, and this will no doubt pay off in the long run. I believe also that all citizens of Jamaica should be finger printed, and this should be mandatory.

Thirdly, employment must be emphasised. This has been said over and over by many, but here is my viewpoint. Farming should be brought back into the fold, especially in this time of recession. Jamaica needs to be producing for itself. Here's my plan. Every able body man/woman who are not working should be given the tools to do farming. This would mean that the Government provide the lands to do this, and there is a lot of land. Here's the catch, if everyone that is not working is doing farming, then there should be no idlers,right... To this end, everyone who is farming is given an ID that proves that they are working, right. If you are seen on the road not working, then you must explain why, no exceptions to this rule..the devil find work for idle hands. We therefore solve the crime problem[to an extent] and the employment problem in one go. There are other factors to be considered, but this is a 5-10 plan, which will be reviewed as other employment areas become open.

Fourthly and very controversial, the tearing down of garrisons. We know that both parties have garrisons, this is no mystery. We also know that most of the crime originates from these garrisons. So why are we keeping them? We know that they support one party or the other. If both parties come together and get rid of them, then we know that crime will go down by 50%. But it goes further than that, the criminals in these areas would have to be a part of the farming project, without exception. Their guns would have to be turned in, everyone one of them. If not, then they would be arrested and imprisoned. Sounds harsh, yes it is. After this is done, Government would have to change the whole culture of these areas. The whole infrastructure would have to be changed, putting in proper housing, parks, clinics, police stations, malls. A total transformation would have to take place in these areas, and we know it can be done. Some would have to move of course, if they are to work in the farming project and other areas.

These are just some of the initial things that I think need to be done. Some may say that education is also a must. But the Government is really doing a lot in that area as we can see. It is not all gloom and doom. Health care is also getting a big boost, with free health care and the national health card.

However, unless crime is curbed then all of the pluses will try to minus in a short space of time. Jamaica can be better, but our leaders must lead. This ain't about one party, but about both parties seeing a vision of a better nation that is united. We have seen the performance of our athletes at the WC. They have given their all for Jamaica. It is about time that the citizens give their all to make us a world class nation..

Jamaica maintain their dominance at the WC...

Jamaica maintained their dominance in the sprints at the WC when they won two gold medals. The medals came in the men's and women's 4X100 relays. With the Americans disqualified from both events, it was much easier for the Jamaicans. The team of Simone Facey, Shelly-Ann Fraser, Aleen Bailey and Kerron Stewart showed excellent baton changes to win the women's event easily over the Bahamas. In the men's event, the team of Steve Mullings, Michael Frater, Usain Bolt and Asafa Powell stormed to a new championship record of 37.31, even with a mix up between Frater and Bolt on the third leg. Usain later said that he feeling very tired as he was not in the best shape right now. Well, Mr. Bolt if you are not in the best shape and you broke two world records, then one wonders what it will be like when you are a 100%. Congratulations are in order for Bolt on his incredible runs at the WC, he is truly a legend in my eyes.

The women have also been exceptional at the WC, winning more medals than the men. Overall, our athletes have made us very proud. I always lament this, but it is such a pity that our leaders have not taken the steps to clean up our country of crime and political tribalism, which is killing us daily.

Tomorrow, we look forward to the women's 4X400 relays where we hunt another medal. Unfortunately the men's team has not made it to the final. You can't win them all. But we are still very proud of everyone who has competed at the WC. Big up Jamaica....One Love...

Felix win 200M..Campbell-Brown second...

News just in is that Allison Felix won the 200M in 22.02 at the IAAF World Championship just a while a go. The golden queen, Veronica Campbell-Brown was second. SEMENYA DISGRACE.....

South African Caster Semenya has been under a cloud for the last 2 days. Having won the 800M women's race at the IAAF World Championship in Berlin, her gender has come into question. While having dominant male chromosome features, Semenya has said over and over again that she is female. After several protests the IAAF said they would have to run tests on her to find out if she is female. It was reported today that her family had published her birth certificate and photos in a South American newspaper. This seems quite disgraceful to me, the IAAF had a lot of time to consider the athletes who are attending the WC, so how is it that they are choosing now to do these tests. This has cast a shadow over the WC, and just shows that there is alot of work for the IAAF to do for future events. Semenya had said she would not collect your medal yesterday, but was convinced to do so. The IAAF has said that even if the test prove that she is not female, she would be allowed to keep her medal. This to me is all 'after the fact'...time will tell...you can't just embarrass someone like this...amazing...

Melaine Walker stunned Lashinda Demus of the US to win the 400M hurldes gold. Walker won in an impressive time of 52.42, a championship record. Walker is also a member of the MVP camp, coached by Stephen Francis. One wonders what the JAAA must be thinking now. Kaleise Spencer was fourth in 53.56, a personal best for her. Spencer will be one for the future for sure, she has come of age..amazing...

Another day, another unbelievable world record from Usain Bolt. Bolt stopped the clock at 19.19, to become a legend in athletics. Bridgett Foster-Hylton finally gets gold...Jamaica 1,3 in IAAF World Championship..

No one could have written this script, but in 100M hurdles anything is possible. Jamaica's Bridgett Foster-Hylton added to the dominance of Jamaica at the IAAF World Championship in Berlin today, when she won a gold medal, beating the Olympic champion Dawn Harper. In what was a sweet victory for Bridgett, who had retired, but coaching great, Stephen Francis persuaded her to return to the track. Foster fell to the track after finding out that she had won and wept. Her execution of the race was brilliant, leaving no room for error, she focused on her lane and extended her torso at the end for victory. Jamaica's celebration did not end there, as Deloreen Ennis-London grabbed the bronze medal, to cop off a perfect night. I must say that I did not expect a gold for Jamaica in this event, but I am so pleased, like a 'please puss'. The JAAA must be holding their heads in shame again, as Bridgett is also a member of the MVP camp. This only proves the point that the athletes are willing to give 'a pound of flesh' for their country and their coach. Big up Jamaica, we large and in charge......

Give IAAF President credit....

IAAF President, Lamine Diack, should be given alot of credit for his intervention in the dispute between the JAAA and the MVP club. If he had not intervened, we would not have seen the Olympic Champion, Shelly-Ann Fraser cop another gold medal. Neither would we have seen, Asafa Powell, display a new found spirit of determination in winning a bronze medal in the 100M. It was very sad that the IAAF had to intervene for the love of the sport, as well thinking Jamaicans should have considered this factor. While there are rules to be abided by, it is still not clear whether or not the camp was mandatory. The MVP President has said that he never got any document saying that the camp was mandatory. What is clear though, is that there is a disagreement between the coach of MVP, Stephen Francis and the JAAA. We have to keep in mind that MVP has five of the top athletes which got medals at the last Olympics. That would have been a major blow to our aim of winning medals at the World Championships.

I am thankful that Mr. Diack showed true leadership in looking beyond personal grievances and flying the banner of athletics high, at a time when there is a further shadow over the sport. We must bear in mind that five of our athletes tested positive for banned substances, which is still unresolved. This fiasco would have no doubt branded our officials as incompetent, and would have given a serious blow to the moral in the camp.

Gay withdraws from 200M..booooooo

Tyson Gay

Tyson Gay has stated that he will not compete in the 200M, sighting a groin injury as the reason.
He had complained of a groin injury before the WC, but based on how he ran in the heats and the final, I am very skeptical about this. He ran an American record. Now, how do you run an American record with a major groin injury? Something is not adding up. I believe based on the astonishing time ran by Bolt, 'im ketch im fraid'. There is no other reason for him not running. Everyone knows that the 100M is more strenuous on your body than the 200M. He has said he will run in the 4X100 relays. Very interesting, anyways...one less person for Bolt to beat...Jamaica to the worl'

Shelly-Ann Fraser just put on an incredible show to win the 100M at the IAAF World Championship, clocking an impressive time of 10.73. It was a Jamaica 1-2, as Kerron Stewart was second, with Carmelita Jones third and Veronica Campbell-Brown fourth. There were four Jamaicans in the final with Aleen Bailey being the fourth person. To his credit he described Bolt as phenomenal, not making any excuses for his defeat...Wow I can't believe it, lost for words......Never thought I would live to see this...

AIC sold...

AIC Ltd., the company owned by Michael Lee-Chin has been sold to Manulife for an estimated value of $150 million dollars. The asset value of the company was approximately $3.8 billion dollars at the time of the sale. Mr. Lee-Chin had built this company from the ground up, starting with $1 million in assets, turning this company and himself into a billion dollar business. However in recent times the value of the company shares had fallen dramatically, due mainly to the recession. Mr. Lee-Chin has indicated that he wants to pursue other goals, such as the development of NCB and the building of resorts in the Portland area of Jamaica. He also intends to sell Columbus Communications, which operates FLOW, a cable/Internet/telephone giant in the Caribbean. One is not sure why the 'fire sale', even though he has said it is to further his overall plans. However it should be noted that Mr. Lee-Chin had to seek a court injunction to stall in paying out dividends to NCB shareholders a couple months ago. It seems to me that the recession is taking its toll. Time will tell what happens next.....

Five athletes out of WC....

The five athletes who were involved in the positive testing for banned substances at the Jamaica Trial will not be allowed to run at the WC. This after technical director of the Jamaica Team in Berlin, Donald Quarrie, excluded them from the list of competitors submitted to the IAAF. It was evident from during the week that it would not have been possible for them to compete. Even though the JADCO disciplinary committee had cleared them, JADCO had filed an appeal against the decision. The IAAF had also indicated that they would not be able to review the case until after the WC. In any case, based on the testing done, the elements found were seen at stimulants by WADA, which would result in an automatic sanction by that body. It did not make any sense to build up these athletes hopes..It is very sad that JADCO has failed to show professionalism in terms of the hearing and the procedures that WADA has laid down....

Bolt looking easy...but..

Usain Bolt putting on a stunning display of sprinting today at the IAAF World Championship in Berlin, when he coasted to second place in the quarter-finals of the 100M. In what seemed like two youngsters having a chat, Bolt and his Racers team-mate, Bailey, strolled to 10.03 and 10.02 respectively. However, the highlight of the day was Asafa Powell's sizzling run of 9.95. Powell had started slowly in his first heat, almost not qualifying. After covering the field after 50 meters, he let his foot off the gas and was nearly past by the other runners. Luckily he got into the third spot.Tyson Gay struggled initially then posted an impressive time of 9.98 to win his quarter-final. However, he seemed a bit uncomfortable in his start, as he was last out of the blocks, but blast to an impressive time.

Tomorrow's semifinal will see Bolt up against Bailey again. Bailey being the only notable name in the line up. It should be a jog in the park for these two. Bolt has been very efficient, conserving his energy effortlessly. In the other semifinal, which almost seems like a final, all the big guns will line up, including, Gay, Powell, Frater and the other american notables. It should be an interesting final come 8:20 pm [Berlin time]. If Usain Blot makes it to the final, which I expect him to do, it should be over by the shout, but track and field is a funny sport. We wait patiently for the final......

Shameful JAAA.....

I was in my bed about to go to sleep and saw an article in the Jamaica Observer concerning the intervension by the IAAF in the matter of the JAAA versus MVP athletes. This is another shame on Jamaica. The JAAA alleges that the MVP athletes should have attended a mandatory camp in Berlin from August 6 - 11. However, Paul Doyle, who is the agent for the MVP camp said that there was no such agreemnt. The JAAA then proceeded to write the IAAF informing them that the MVP athletes would be barred from the World Championships. However, the IAAF stepped in yesterday, stating that in the interest of the sport and the WC, they were asking the JAAA to allow the athletes to compete. President of the JAAA, Howard Aris indicated in a meeting held with the IAAF that they would allow them to do this.

Now what type of non-sense is this. This is totally crazy, JADCO now this. Have Jamaican officials lost their screws. Asafa Powell summed it up correctly in an interview when he said, "It's just really bad how our own country was fighting us down and someone else had to stop it. I honestly wasn't worried, I more felt bad about the whole situation because my own people were fighting me off (the team) and I've been in this thing for a while now."

We had seen reports earlier that coach of the MVP camp indicated that the facilities of the Berlin camp were sub-standard, not even having hurdles or weights room. Now in this day and age, who would select a camp without these basic amenities.

It is quite surprising that in this day and age that Jamaica has sunk to this low. All these athletes are professionals, why do they need to be a a Berlin camp to jell? They have been competing at Grand Prixs and other major events up to this point. Why do they need to train with these other athletes? and without their coach who is not a member of the Jamaica Panel at the WC. Why is it that Jamaica has to look like a bunch of unprofessional cry babies in front of the whole world. If the JADCO debacle wasn't enough, now this.

I can only hope that the MVP athletes can build up the motivation to run, not for the JAAA, but for the people of Jamaica who stand behind them. We cannot allow this type of stuff to belittle our people. We are a proud people, and other sportsmen work very hard to raise the Jamaican flag.
The JAAA and the MVP camp need to sit down and work out their problems, instead of washing their dirty laundry in front of the world.

No wonder they call us third world....

The JADCO Appeal....

See full size image
So we all thought the athletes were cleared...not. It turns out that the even though the committee set up by JADCO, which is the disciplinary committee, does not have the final say. JADCO as a body can appeal the decision, and so they have. They have not disclosed the reason for the appeal, and so we are left in limbo again. What is clear though, is that the athletes will not be participating in the WC. The JAAA have not come out and said that in so many words, but it would seem only logical for them to bar them from entering. The IAAF will not make a decision on the matter until after the WC anyways. If for instance, we were to send our athletes to the WC, and JADCO or the IAAF reject the decision, then any medals won with these guys on the team would be voided. So the question would be, why risk it?
These guys would not win a medal in their individual events anyway. Maybe on the relays they could win a medal, but there are competent replacements, so there is no loss of sleep over this.
In any case, as I have said before, these athletes must get better advise about the products/supplements they take before they use them. It is just crazy that in this day and age, with the access to information that is available that athletes would just mistakenly take banned substances, or traces of such...
I just hope that this can be resolved as soon as possible. It already looks bad on Jamaica, and we can no longer say with any certainty that any of our athletes are clean....isn't that sad...bwoy I tell you...

the lips caressed each word released,

When faith broke through sin,

the sacrifice of his Son,
hung cruelly on a cross,

The journey of forsaken years,

Breaking News: 4 Athletes cleared...but

JADCO just announced that they have cleared the four athletes who tested positive for banned substances at the Jamaica Trails. However, as has been the case with JADCO for the last two weeks, they have failed to release all the details as to why these athletes have been cleared. Only to say that they could not find enough evidence to bring a case against them. We hope that in the coming days they will elaborate, as this does not look good for Jamaica or the sport. Where is the IAAF in all of this?.....hmmmmmmm

Swine flu....Vaccine or anti-viral drugs?

With the fall season approaching, there is the danger of an onslaught of the swine flu [H1N1] virus. The choice now is whether to take the vaccine or anti-viral drugs. Now I am no expert in the field, but it seems logical that we should be taking the vaccine rather than anti-viral drugs. Its been said that these anti-viral drugs will cause viral resistance, meaning that it may spawn a drug resistant H1N1 flu. I have never been one to take vaccines, but this year I may have to, in order to protect myself. The fact is that there are so many strains of flu's out there, that it boggles the mind. But they say 'prevention is better than cure'.....

Oil falls while the DOW climbs...

It seems that we may just be turning the corner in realtion to the recession. With the jobless claim falling to 9.4% yesterday, all the pundits have been saying that the recession is easing. Oil prices which started the week on high, ended at 70.93, not dramatic but some clawback. The DOW continues its upwards rise ending at 9370 pts on Friday, signalling renewed confidence in US stocks. We are not out of the woods as yet, but there are signs that things may be improving......

The JADCO joke......

Onlookers observing from a far might just believe that the Jamaican Anti-Doping Commission is just a joke. Over the last two weeks this has been clearly demonstrated by their ineptitude to deal with the current doping issue of five Jamaican athletes so tested for banned substances at the Jamaican Trials. Earlier in the week, Sheri-Ann Brooks, one of the five, was cleared of taking banned substances, or so it seems. It turns out that there was a mishap in terms of the procedures, in that, when her 'B' sample was tested there was no observer present from her camp, as they were not informed of a time or date of the testing. The committee set up to hear the case of Ms. Brooks decided to clear her due to this fact, but now an appeal has been made by JADCO. Seems very strange at the least.

Yesterday the other four athletes had their hearing with the committee and now will wait on a decision on Monday. We see in Brazil that two of their athletes tested positive for banned substances, and they have been banned from the WC. The pace of our hearing has been dismal, with countless delays and a lack of information, which has caused persons to speculate.

If we are to maintain our transparency and professional approach to drug testing, then this must be improved immediately. If this does not happen then there will be no confidence in our drug testing, and people will forever be pointing their fingers and saying our athletes are taking drugs. The JAAA needs to insist that these standards are raised. Mr. McCook who is a member of the IAAF must insist that proper procedures are followed and that a PR person be assigned to disseminate information. Without this we will be seen as a joke.....

Forty-seven years now we independent,
but are we really free from the colonial masters,
we still have the queen,
our constitution still look British,
we still wear them old white wig in court,

Our people still fighting against one another,
in murder and mayham,
our out of many one people remains the same,
but only one or two out of every four race is prospering,
where is the pride we used to have,
what happen to the morals we used to preach,

We independent,
but the slave master continue to whip us,
but in a different way,
not physically as before,
and not only mentally for sure,
through free trade and a fall sense of globalisation,
where only one and two mighty few rule,

the chain break and hang up,
but it seems like our drive has diminished,
we no longer fight for our rights,
instead we borrow our way out of problems,
the IMF is back,
and the belt them soon start tighten again,

Technology and infrastructure looks great,
but education and health care still look gloomy,
we still far behind in literacy,
and the public hospitals them,
not even you dog you want to go there,
it free,
but we still paying for bed sheet,

Politics get a little better,
but the corruption still eating away at the poor taxpayer,
politicians still nyaaming the lion's share,

Jamaica we independent for forty-seven years,
now we need to take over our country,
and stop looking to the north and the east for help,
we need to become Jamaicans,
not jam-british or jam-ericans,
our heroes paid dearly for us,
the generation long before suffered for us.....

Sheri-Ann Brooks cleared by JADCO...

News just in......
Sheri-Ann Brooks has been cleared of using a banned substance. She was one of five athletes who tested positive for a banned substance following the Jamaica Trials in Kingston, Jamaica.

The reason for her been cleared was given by Mr. Gammon, chairman of JADCO disciplinary panel, explained their findings. "We heard the matter in respect to Sheri-Ann Brooks and decided that based on an irregularity with the testing of the B sample, we could not conclusively beyond a comfortable doubt determine the positive finding of the A sample."

The other athletes have not been reviewed as yet........

Out of high school.....

It was 6:30 pm and his father had just arrived home from work. His mother was waiting patiently for him to come home, as she was still fuming over the CXC results. When she told his father that he had failed 3 of his 6 subjects, he could hear the roof lift off as if taken by a hurricane wind. His father yelled, "boy come here now". He timidly entered the kitchen area, his father's face was as red as he had ever seen it before. He was mad beyond words, he couldn't even talk, his mother had to give him a glass of water to cool the vapours rising from his face. He was tempted to beat his skin off his body, but ended up saying that "you wasted your time at school boy, and now this is the result". His other siblings were now home as well, and they helped to calm the situation. They all ate dinner, laughing and talking. His Dad said he would think about the situation and decide what would be next.

The next morning his father told him he would not be going back to high school. He would stay home and study and do the resit of the exams in January. He would also do an A level subject to enhance his chances to go to College. His sister who was a lecturer at one of the College's would help in his preparation for Mathematics and he would do evening classes for English. He couldn't say a word, he was just happy to have been given a chance to redeem himself. He would have to forget about the dream of going to sixth form with his friends. He knew they would look down on him now as a failure, but the good thing is that he was not going back to the school. His best friend who he had helped had gotten five subjects, and so he was going to sixth form. He never got a "thank you" from him, only a boastful grin, which said, I made it and you didn't. He was now determined to rise above his disappointment. This was the motivation he needed to succeed, he was no longer feeling down, but happy to be able to step back and review his life. He was now focused on making it to College, but the first step was to pass his resits....

JAAA and JADCO fiasco.....

In the news last night I heard that the Jamaica Amateur Athletics Association (JAAA) has stated that the five athletes who tested positive for banned substances would still retain their places in the World Championship squad. In their defence they stated that if they are found to be innocent after the JADCO hearing, then it would look bad to have taken them out of the squad. That argument for me carries no water. These athletes are aware of all the illegal substances that should not be taken, whether it is a mild drug or not. What if all of them are proven to be guilty of an offence, then what does the JAAA do, bearing in mind that the deadline for entries to the World Championship ended yesterday.

The next problem is the slow pace at which the Jamaica Anti-Coping Commission (JADCO) has been operating. Yesterday should have been the official hearing, but like Friday it was postponed again because they were protests by the athletes and their lawyers regarding some of the panel members. While I have been praising JADCO for their unbiased appproach to date, this situation is not only lame, but shows the poor state of our administrators. Who is really in charge?

JADCO has also failed to officially name the banned substance or even the athletes involved. The blame does not end there, the IAAF has not done so either, so we really don't know which drug was used. So how is it then that the JAAA are so confident that these athletes will be found innocent and be able to compete at the WC. Even a blind man can see that this matter will not be settled before August 15, which is the start date of the WC. We still do not know if all the athletes have requested the 'B' sample testing, which will be another matter all together.

What is clear to me is the level of incompetence demonstrated by this so called high profile panel. After almost 2 weeks, no one really know what is happening, and the world looking on must be saying to themselves, "do these guys have a clue as to what they are doing".......

Oli moving back up...so too the DOW

Is the recession over? No one knows. Even though the pundits are claiming that we have have turned the corner, they are still undecided. What is clear though, is that the DOW and oil prices have been on the move. The DOW cleared 9200 points last week, and it set to continue its upward rise. Oil is now trading above $71..meaning that, wait for it....your gas bill is about to go up again. With the high unemployment rates worldwide, OPEC has not had any mercy in raising oil prices by increasing their supplies, this under the alleged illusion that the world economy is on the turnaround. The average man knows that this is not so, he has lost his job, been unable to pay his debts, is hungry and is wondering what next....

Verdict on five athletes still unknown...

The five athletes who tested positive for banned substances at the recent Jamaica Trials is still unknown. In fact, the names of all the athletes is yet to be confirmed. Some say this has marred the name of Jamaican athletics, but I say differently. For me, it shows that our anti-doping commission, JADCO is doing its jobs. We have seen in the past where other such bodies have failed. Case in point is Carl Lewis, who has now admitted to taking banned substances in 1988, where he failed 3 drug tests. It is ironic in that case that he was not banned by the relelvant authorities but was allowed to go on and win 3 gold medals. At the time, he was constantly complaining that Canadian, Ben Johnson was on drugs. It now turns out that both of them were taking banned substances. There have also been other athletes like Flo Jo, who died a couple years ago, who ran times that seem super human, who may have been excused by those said authorities. Mr. Lewis in recent time has been criticising Usain Bolt, saying that he is not sure whether he is running clean. Even though Mr. Bolt has never failed a drug test, and has a history of outstanding performances from his junior years.
What is clear to me is that JADCO is not hiding any athletes who may fail drug tests. I would hope that other authorities would do the same. Apart from Jamaica, there have been no other positive drug tests worldwide, which to me seems very 'fishy'. We know that there are alot of designer drugs which may be untraceable, but we also know that the WADA has been monitoring alot of these new drugs. Whatever happens, by the end of today we should know the fate of these athletes, as JADCO is set to make a ruling on the matter......

IMF again for Jamaica....

Many remember the IMF regimes in the 70's, a time when I was a mere baby. This time around, it seems that Jamaica does not have a choice. With bauxite and remittances dried up, the JLP seems to find its hands tied. All the economists and skeptics seem to have ran out of ideas. Unfortunately, it is never enough to criticize without solutions. With the recession at hand, tax collection seem to have suffered a huge blow. Bearing it mind that tax collection helps to pay teachers, civil servants, police, etc. With the short fall in collection, mainly due to persons being unemployed, and the continuous problem of tax evasion, the Government finds itself n a bind. The Prime Minister has stated that the term of the loans will be about 24 months, but that is an estimate, as no-one really knows when this recession will be over. It was heartening to see that the IRS will be reviewing the Tax System in Jamaica, as tax evasion has resulted in heavy short falls over the years. In my mind though, the major issue with the tax system is that the law has no teeth, it is time that people who evade taxes are sent to prison, along with a fine. There is no point allowing a person to pay a fine, and then be able to continue in business, that is just crazy. For people to take the system serious, there must be severe punishment for evasion. It is great what Mr. Danville Walker is doing at Customs, and it is a pity there are more of his calibre in leadership. His no non-sense approach needs to be adopted by the Tax Departments across the board for any real change to take place. It is time that the Government review all the systems and make drastic changes. After the recession, it cannot be business as usual. My hope is that the IMF will insist on several changes to our tax system and the monitoring of corruption. The issue of crime is for another time, that is a monster that seems untameable at this time....IMF here we come....

If I could....

If I could rewrite my life,
the story would be different,
the bad things I've done would be erased,
my journey with God would have been sooner,
those wasted moments would be retrieved,

If I could have treated someone better,
my greatest joy would be to relive that moment,
the sad words mentioned would be swallowed,
left in the bowels of hate,

If I could love again,
my choices would have been different in some ways,
the inner images I would gaze at,
forsaking the outer images that the world worships,

If I could do what I love the most,
the words that I write would be my Everest,
each step that I make towards the peak,
would bring great joy to my soul,

If I could read the greatest book over again,
the word of God I would cling to,
life lessons have been learnt in it,
life has never been the same because of it,

If I could change the world today,
love and peace I would pray for,
poverty and fear I would banish,
the simple things would be the best,
riches and fame wouldn't matter,

If I could change today,
the memories of a brighter day would wake me up,
my prayer to God would be the same,
the mistakes of the past would be left in the wind,

If I could....

Summer done....

The summer holidays were almost done, and CXC results were ready. In those days you had to go to the school and collect your results, and watch some students celebrate, while others cried. He arrived at JC around 10:00 am, and true to form, guys were celebrating, while some were looking as if their favourite video game had been taken away. The lines were long, so he had to wait a bit. Of course he saw some of his classmates, and those that had passed all their subjects stopped by and started to brag. He was very scared, knowing that he may have failed a few of his subjects, due to his lack of preparation, helping others instead of focusing on his own studies. He was now at the top of the line and gave the teacher who was issuing the results his name. His jaw dropped when she told him that he had only passed 3 of his six subjects. He was devastated. He kept replaying in his mind what his father had said, "if you fail your exams then you will have to work with my mechanic". He didn't speak to anyone, he just looked around as if in a daze. The only good result for him was in history, as his history teacher had said he would fail miserably, but he had used her words to challenge him to pass. That would be the way he would motivate himself in the future, by using the negatives of people to inspire him. His day was off to a bad start, and he tried to figure out how he would make his parents understand his failures in the other three subjects. It wasn't that he had failed badly, he had missed the pass mark by getting C's. In those days, when you sat the CXC you had to get at least two B's to be guaranteed a passing grade, now all that has changed. In those days, passing the CXC meant you had to get a grade 1 or 2, now they have made grade 3 a passing grade. Apart from him failing three of his six subjects, he was now in a terrible position, he would have to resit his fifth form year, and would not be able to go to sixth form. He wondered which option was the worse. In looking back at his exams, he couldn't understand how he had failed English or Mathematics, in the mock exams he had gotten grade 1's for those subjects, they were like his best subjects in school. All those times spent helping others instead of studying for himself, came back to haunt him. He would learn a valuable lesson that day. He took the long journey home, instead of his usual short-cut, he walked an extra 15 minutes to get home. It was mid-day and his parents were still at work, so he had some time to prepare himself. He knew his father would likely put the belt to his rear end. He wasn't worried anymore though,he thought to himself, "there is nothing I can do now to change the situation, I have already failed the three, I just have to move on."
His Mom arrived home for lunch, as she worked about 5 minutes from home. She called him from his room and asked him how the CXC results were. He told her he had failed three of the six, and she flipped. First things she said is, "I told you so, you were busy helping other people while your work was in jeopardy, wait till your Dad hears this, he's going to be so mad." He thought to himself, "so much for walking in my siblings shoes". It was going to be a long evening.....
